OVERVIEW
In Part 3 of Housing your Chickens we looked at 45 FREE DIY CHICKEN COOP PLANS, TUTORIALS AND DESIGNS for those who want to give building their own coop and run.
In Part 4 we are going to look at the many wonderful already built permanent coops that may only require some assembly.
THE CHICKEN COOP AND RUN
Part 1 through to Part 3 of our Housing chicken series has a host of information you may find very helpful. So be sure to check them out.
RULES AND REGULATIONS
Before you begin to design or establish your coop it is best to check out any city ordinances that govern keeping poultry in your area.
There may be required licenses and or permits to build or house backyard structures such as coops and or runs.
There may also be regulations as to where you can build and or house these structures.
As you do not want to be fined or risk the chance of being prosecuted this is a very important process/step in owning and housing chickens.
This is the very first step to take once a person has decided they want to give owning poultry a go.
RULES OF THUMB
- Coop must be built to any ordinance or regulatory requirement governing your area.
- It must have at least 4-square foot per chicken in the coop.
- The coop should be lifted at least 2 – 3 feet off the ground.
- Make sure you use a good material for the run and coop.
- Ensure roosting/laying boxes are at least 3 – 4 inches deep.
- Make sure roosting polls are thick and sturdy enough for the birds.
- Completely enclosed runs are safer for the chickens.
- Both the run and coop should be properly ventilated and insulated.
- There must always be a good patch of loose dirt or sand for a dust bath.
- Use lining for the coop and run such as wood chips, shredded paper and loose straw.
- Kit the coop out with the correct drinking, feeding and perching equipment.
QUICK OVERVIEW OF THE PROS AND CONS OF BUYING ALREADY BUILT COOPS/RUNS
Pros:
- They come ready assembled or with just some assembly required
- Less time consuming than building your own
- Most come with some form of chicken accessories such as nesting boxes, waters, feeders, etc. that are designed specifically for that house.
- You have the exact measurements of the design
- There are usually warranties on the houses and or runs
- There are a lot of really great designs to choose from
Cons:
- You do not get to customize your own coop/run
- They can be quite expensive
- You never really know what you are getting until it is unpacked if you have not chosen it from a store.
- The Coop/run you may want may not be available in your area
TIPS ON DECIDING WHERE TO POSITION THE COOP
Have shelter from the wind and sun
Even a temporary coop will need some planning as wherever you place the temporary coop for a day or two must be sheltered from the elements.
Shade from the sun and shelter from the wind
Must not be in or near a water runoff
It is best to keep the structure away from any water run-offs on or near the property
As chickens tend to dig they do make sand and wet sand equals mud.
The wet and damp alone are causes of various disease in chickens especially those with feathered feet.
Mud is just as bad and can actually cause some clogging if the chicken’s vent gets caked in mud and the feathers surrounding it gets matted.
Must have enough air flow through the coop
It must be positioned where it is going to some nice ventilation through the coop as good air-flow in the coop is extremely important. Healthy chickens need good ventilation in their coops.
As they tend to give off a lot of moisture breathing.
PERMANENT FULLY BUILT OR SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED CHICKEN COOPS
DIY coops and or runs can be fun and a huge challenge if you do not know what you are doing.
They are also time-consuming and you may not end up with the coop looking exactly like you pictured it.
With an already made coop, you get the exact design you want with no effort other than maybe turning a screw or two. Or deciding where to position it, maybe getting a license or paying some fees in order to have a structure such as a coop and run on your property.
I like already built coops as I am quite a ditz when it comes to D.I.Y. But that is not to say that I am not learning! Because I have really but I thought I would start with the basics like dust baths and waterers before moving up to the coop/run level.
I have listed a lot of some of my favorite ready-made permanent coops for my readers to see. I have also listed the website and some other hand information about the structure.

Review: This is quite a unique coop that gives you a coop, an enclosed outside area for the chickens, a storage unit and a garden box to grow some nice herbs in.
I do like the look of the design with its neat decorative trim making it look like a small barn.
It has an asphalt roof to keep the weather at bay, with good ventilation and insulation. The roof is hinged so it can be opened to access the inside of the coop. There are roosting polls and pop-out nesting box that opens for egg collection and can be locked. The windows are wire meshed as is the run.

Review: I think this is such a sweet design. It also allows a person to use up those old playsets that the kids no longer use.
It is a very inspiring design. For people with kids, there are so many of their toy sets that instead of junking one could utilize for great designs for their coops.
The only to keep in mind is to check first to ensure that the sets have no components that may be toxic to the chickens.

Review: A really unique design for any garden. It has very good feeding and watering system as well. This coop has plenty of nesting areas with easy outside access and roosting polls. There is even an area where a person can attach a planter. I think planters on the hen house are a great idea as you can plant nice herbs in them. There are some herbs that have been known to keep away critters.
They also tend to keep the chicken house smell away and the hens like to peck around in them too if you let them.
This coop has the hen house on the top with the run beneath it giving the chickens some protection against the elements.

Review: Stand up coops make getting in and out to both maintain the coop and get to the chickens so much easier. It also gives the chicken a lot airier living space making the coop that much more hygienic as fresh air circulates freely through the entire place.
This coop is tall yet does not take up too much room making it quite ideal for the medium to the larger back garden.
There are easy access doors through the run and from the outside of the coop.
All doors are secure and can be bolted. The entire coop including the run is roofed making it really weather hardy and comfortable for the chickens nearly all year around. The Urban Coop Company also uses good material specially selected to last.

Review: This is a lovely walk-in chicken coop that does not take up too much space as it has been really well designed.
There are a lot of roosting rails and nesting boxes for the chickens the coop is accessed through the walk-in run which extends beneath the two sides of the coop. Each side has nesting boxes and the one side a coop roosting area.
The nesting boxes can also be accessed from the outside of the coop, so a person does not have to enter the run to access the fresh eggs.
The round room gives it more height and makes it look like a nice back garden feature. This is an open-air type coop with is also well insulated inside the rooting and nesting areas for the chicken’s comfort.

Review: For the larger back gardens or rather the homestead this is a great coop.
It is well designed and laid out for easy access to the nesting and roosting areas at the back of the coop.
There or plenty of windows for good ventilation throughout the coop and the large run in the front of the coop make it great for the chickens to wander about well protected.
The front of the coop has flap open wooden windows that are easy to close in the colder weather and the middle section of the run is covered for a bit of protection for the chickens from the elements.
This is a really good coop for the homestead and is built really well from quite good quality wood.

Review: This coop has a 12-foot run and a door that has a pull-out rod at the back exposing the entire roosting area. This gives a person full unobstructed access into the house and makes it great for maintenance and cleaning. It has three nice length roosting rails for the chickens and a pull-out tray below it for quick cleaning. There are two pop-out nesting boxes on either side of the house. These have hinged lids for access to the nesting area and to collect those daily fresh eggs without having to go through the coop.
There are sliding meshed windows on either side of the coop for good ventilation and light.
I must say this is a well thought out, well crafted and sturdy coop. If a person has the space for it, I think it would make a great addition to the garden. It can also house a decent sized flock. As the run can be take away from the house it is also relatively easy to move as the coop has lifting handles. It would require about three to four people to move the run.

The pop-out nesting box has a hinged lid for access to the nests. The little mock-barn style door on the side gives access to the roosting area that has roosting polls and as pull out cleaning tray beneath it. Review: A classic little red barn design complete with shutters and a teeny little top window. All these little barn designs I think are really great and make for a classic chicken coop. There are two pop-out nesting boxes on either side of the coop with hinged lids that lift for quick access to the nesting area. The little shutter barn style doors are the entry to the roosting area below which is the pull-out cleaning tray. There are roosting polls inside the coop and in the run. The roof is made of asphalt making it water and weatherproof. All locks are steel and secure for protection from predators and the chicken’s safety.
The run is located beneath the house which offers the chickens some protection against the elements when they want to be out on a blustering day.
I do think this is a great starter coop and will look nice in any back garden.

As their products are quite popular they may have to be pre-ordered like this one what is one of their best sellers.

This coop offers really good ventilation, wood that is animal-friendly, hinged roofed chicken nesting boxes on either side of the coop for egg access.

It has a large run that has a security locked door on it for access into the run. The chicken coop has a large roosting area accessible from the back sliding door of the coop. There are two large roosting polls in the coop which could probably hold around three standard sized chickens at one time each. There is a plastic pull out tray beneath the roosting area for quick cleaning. The pop-out nesting boxes on either side of the coop have hinged lids for access to the nests and fresh daily eggs.
There are two sets of handles on either side of the coop and run so the coop can be lifted and relocated.

Review: This is a nice little coop with a double-sided run. The chickens have two ladders for easy access to either side of the run. The run is also extended beneath the coop for full access to both sides. It is covered with a weatherproofed roof. There are three access doors to enter the run one little one below the hen house and the other two on either side which is the same height as the run.
The little house has a pull-out tray beneath the roosting area and an open door for getting to the roosting area and the nesting area.
This is a really great feature for any garden and it is not too heavy, so it can be moved if necessary. Although it may require more than one person to move it to ensure the coop does not get damaged. I think this would also make an awesome isolation coop for 2 to 3 new additions to an established flock.

This is a good-sized starter coop for up to 4 standard sized chickens. It is also a great coop to teach kids how to look after chickens. It has a nice sized access door into the run itself. It has a lot of ventilation in the hen house and good-sized access doors into the roosting area which is bolted. A pull-out tray is located beneath the roosting area for quick cleaning. There is a sliding window to cover the mesh vents. The pop-out nesting box has a hinged lid for quick access to the nests for eggs and cleaning.

The little house itself has a functioning door that is lockable and has little windows for ventilation. There is a separate non-opening window next to it for added ventilation and light. There is a pull-out tray beneath the roosting area. The pop-out egg box is nice and deep with a hinged lid allowing quick access to the nests for eggs and cleaning.

Review: A nice simple chicken coop and run. The run has a folding roof to allow for it to be opened or flattened and closed. If open it can allow the chickens to get out if they can fly a bit to stretch their wings. If in a high predator area this may not be the best idea to open it.
There are 2 nesting boxes in the pop-out nesting area with a hinged lid for access into the nests.
For a simple’s little coop and run for up to 3 chickens (but please check with the manufacturer for the actual chicken capacity), this is a really great design.
It also makes a great isolation coop for new additions to an already established flock. It gives the new birds a bit more security and they can escape back to their home once they are allowed to mix with the other birds.

Review: Pawhut design their products to last and be efficient. This little hutch/coop is great for a small back garden with two hens. The little run beneath opens up so the chickens can free-range and the top coop door also opens. All doors latch fast to make the little hutch nice and secure for the birds. I required a person could buy an additional larger run to open-range the chickens. The little hutch is also quite light, so it is easy to relocate around the garden to save the grass and make it more hygienic.
A good buy for the first-time or small flock owners. It is also a great temporary coop to have a decent price.

For the smaller back garden and first-time chicken flock owner, this is a really good coop to start with. If you expand your flock and get a bigger coop this would be a great temporary coop to have as a nursery, brood coop, isolation or medical coop.
As it is quite lightweight it is easy to relocate around the garden which will save your grass. It has great ventilation from the windows. Easy access inside both the house and run with little-bolted doors and a pull-out poop tray.

Review: This is supposed to be a bunny hutch. But it can easily accommodate 2 standard sized chickens. It is ideal for the small back garden and there is an extra run that can be attached to this hutch to give the chickens some extra outside space to roam. Depending on the size of the smaller garden a person could even look at making a larger run for the chickens. It is quite predators save and easy to clean. A nice simple design for the smaller flock.

Review: This little barn style chicken coop has two nesting areas, one on either side of the main coop. Both nesting lids open and can be locked. There is a roosting area that can be accessed through two doors. The run can come off the house which can be both a good thing and a bad thing. I would make sure it can be securely latched onto the house. This makes the coop moveable, so you can relocate the chickens to greener grass when required.
This is suitable for first-time chicken owners and would look good in any back garden with its wooden finish and green roof. The design makes the chicken house look eco-friendly.

There are three easy access doors into the coop and run. A wooden ramp is set for the chickens to move from the coop to the run and back.
It has 3 nesting boxes and 2 roosting polls inside the house.
There is a pull-out poop tray for cleaning, but I would test this as soon as it arrived as I noticed a few customers complain about it not working.

Run: Has no run
Review: Although this is just a coop with no run I do like the design. It comes with 4 nesting boxes. Two on either side of the coop with easy open lockable lids. This makes both collecting eggs and cleaning out the nesting area really easy.
The main sections of the coop are where you can position roosting rails and the roof is hinged so it can be opened. Once again this makes the cleaning and maintaining of the coop really easy. The little ramp into the coop also acts as the door.
There are a few options that a person can choose from if they wanted to add a small run onto the coop. Either build one, get one custom made or maybe it would be a good idea to get a day run. See Part 4 of Housing Chickens where I list some of the Chicken runs.
This is a great coop for the first-time chicken owner and for free-range chickens.
