Red Sindhi Cattle Breed – Everything You Need to Know


The Red Sindhi is the most popular of the Zebu type cattle breed and is excellent producers of milk.
They are widely kept throughout Pakistan for the excellent milk quality and production.
They are also popular cattle for crossbreeding with European breeds of cattle to improve on the various breeds they are crossed with.

General Information: The Red Sindhi has been distributed throughout the world and is a popular choice for cross-breeding with the Jersey cattle breed in places such as Australia, Sri Lanka, Australia amongst a few countries that cross-breed them.

They are well known for their ability to withstand tropical conditions, their high parasite and disease resistance. Their fertility at higher temperatures is quite a desirable quality in the breed that is highly sought after amongst a lot of farmers in tropical type climates.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

They are from the Zebu type breed which means that they have a hump on their shoulders or lower necks. This hump is more pronounced in the male of the breed and they have a loose dewlap. They have long sturdy legs, a long body frame that is well rounded and a medium sized head with alert ears.

COW BREEDING & MILKING INFORMATION

Most Cattle produce milk but not all of them are used in the dairy Cattle capacity for their milk. Cows only calve once a year and should have 12 to 14-month inter-calving cycle. They are a good milk cow and are also quite fertile and breed well. They have easy births and will look after their young until they are old enough to wean.

Lactation Period: Cows lactation period can last for up to about 10 months (305) days.
Milking From: 1 to 6 weeks after Calving
Drying off Period: The cow should have a 12 to 14-month inter-calving cycle. Drying off period for around 60 days before she can calve again.

Most Cattle breeds can be used for meat and produce an acceptable quality of meat. The Red Sindhi is not used for meat production they are kept as a draft animal to work the land, pull carts, etc. and for their really good dairy production

HISTORY

There is not much documented history of the Red Sindhi cattle. The breed originated in the Sindh province of Pakistan and they are widely kept for the milk production across Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and various other countries.

They have been crossbred with many other breeds to combine the animals tropical adaptations, fertility in tropical climates and high milk production.
