General Information: | The Florida Cracker breed of cattle are one of the oldest breeds of cattle in the USA and probably one of the rarest cattle breeds. They are of the Criollo-type cattle breeds which were brought over to America by the Spanish Conquistadors. The Florida Cracker is closely related to cattle breeds such as the Texas Longhorn, Corriente, and Pineywoods cattle breeds. Purebred Cracker breeds have not been crossbred with any of the English cattle breeds, unlike that of the Pineywood breed of cattle. The Florida Crackers numbers were sorely depleted in the 1940s due to new laws involving free-roaming livestock and the introduction of larger beef breeds. Despite the valiant efforts of the American Livestock Conservancy the breed’s population are still at critical levels and they are also listed on the Slow Food USA’s Ark of Taste. |

HISTORY
In the 16th century, Spanish Conquistadors brought their cattle with them to the new world. The Florida Cracker was a small breed of cattle that were developed from these horned cattle breeds and they quickly adapted to the climate and harsh environment of Florida.
The numbers of the Florida Cracker cattle have drastically declined to the point where they are now listed by the American Livestock Conservancy as critical. There is a conservation program that has been running in an official manner since the 1970s. Doyle Connor the Florida Commissioner of Agriculture back put out the word how important it was to save this heritage breed.
